about

"Maria" was the robot from Fritz Lang's classic 1927 film "Metropolis." She was one of the first robots to be depicted to public audiences on film. "Metropolis" is also one of the earliest depictions of "urban dystopia" on film -- Chaplin's "Modern Times" would not be released for another nine years. The very word "robot" had not existed until introduced in 1921 by Czech playwright Karel Čapek.
