I was having a conversation with my 10-year-old godson, Addison. We were trying to figure out what S.O.S. stood for and from whence it came, a problem solved thanks to our phone-sized tablets and Yahoo Answers.

S.O.S. stands for nothing but dots and dashes -- a procedural signal in Morse code. SOS is commonly mistook to mean "Save our Ship" or "Save our Souls," these are in fact "bacronyms", arising after the introduction of the Morse code prosign.
